During the third Urban Art Festival „CityLeaks 2015“ - which is taking place from 4th to 20th September 2015 in Cologne - is presenting new and never seen art works by the artists ALIAS, Thomas Baumgärtel, DZIA, Mister P, Rourke Van Dal, Tankpetrol,

For street art lovers, Cologne is the place to be in September. During the third edition of CityLeaks festival, the world’s greatest talents will convene there to create wall works and make the city a prettier place. But artists will not only work the streets, but will also exhibit within gallery walls. Apart from the show at Die Kunstagentin, another one will open for the occasion of this year’s event. A group urban art exhibition coming to 30works, entitled CityLeaks @ 30works, will feature ten prominent local and international artists you most certainly know: Alias, Thomas Baumgartel, Dzia, Mister P, Rourke van Dal, Tankpetrol, Various & Gould, XooooX and xxxhibition.

CityLeaks Festival 2015 in Cologne – The World on the Street Every two years since 2011, CityLeaks festival unites urban art and the citizens of Cologne, celebrating arts and promoting new talents. Working together with the city municipality, the festival organizers visually enrich the buildings and walls of Cologne, bringing together the world’s biggest names as well as emerging artists to show their passion and share it with the community. Joining this task will be 30works, one of the first spaces in Germany that has introduced pop and street art to the country’s vibrant scene. To celebrate the diversity of genres and styles there will be 10 selected artists from around Europe, with a series of works made with different techniques and revolving around a variety of contemporary topics.

CityLeaks @ 30works For the urban art exhibition at 30works, Berlin-based Alias will present his trademark stencil characters who criticise certain aspects of society through changing moods and gloomy appearance. Thomas Baumgartel, known for his iconic works throughout Cologne, will also be there, with his playful paintings of Peanuts and other familiar faces of today. Belgian wonderboy Dzia is bringing his famous golden line-filled animals, while French artist Mister P’s classic poster art will once again depict his country’s political and general atmosphere. UK artist Craig Everett, aka Rourke van Dal, plays with the cliches of Brit-pop with his clever spray paintings, while Polish Irek Jasutowicz, aka Tankpetrol, likes to depict his time in the military. The urban art exhibition will also feature the FaceTime series by famous German duo Various & Gould, and another local artist representing Germany is xxxhibition, with his comic icons and superheroes. Finally, exhibiting for the first time at 30works there’s XooooX with his female figures.

Urban Art Exhibition at 30works Urban art lovers, Cologne awaits you, as there will be a proper explosion of artworks all over city streets and within gallery walls. With its rich tradition in street arts, which involved legends like Banksy and D*Face, 30works continues to bring iconic artists and works into its vast exhibition space, and this will be their third time as the participants of CityLeaks festival. The CityLeaks @ 30works urban art exhibition will open at 30works in Cologne, Germany, on September 4th at 7pm. The show will run through September 20th, 2015.

Bear with a Sore Head - Print Release

Novembers Print Release is ’Bear with a Sore Head’ Signed & Numbered Archival Print on 315gsm Paper

’The hats were first worn by British soldiers in 1815, following the defeat of Napoleon’s French Imperial Guards at the battle of Waterloo. The French grenadiers wore bearskins to appear taller and more intimidating, and Britain adopted the towering hats for soldiers in ceremonial duties and guarding royal residencies as a symbol of their victory.’
The standard bearskin of the British Foot Guards is 18 inches tall, weighs 1.5 pounds and is made from the fur of the Canadian black bear. However, an officer’s bearskin is made from the fur of the Canadian brown bear as the female brown bear has thicker, fuller fur and is dyed black. An entire skin is used for each hat.
In 1997, Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Gilbert said that he wanted to see bearskins phased out as soon as possible due to ethical concerns, but no replacement was available at that time.
In 2005, the Ministry of Defence began a two-year test of artificial fur for the hats. The army has already replaced beaver hats and leopard skins, worn by some of its soldiers, with artificial materials. In March 2005, Labour MP Chris Mullin called for an immediate ban on bearskin hats stating that they "have no military significance and involve unnecessary cruelty."
Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has protested against the continued use of real fur for the guards’ hats, alleging that the animals are killed cruelly. For several years, PETA members have held demonstrations, including one at St. Peter’s Hill, near St Paul’s Cathedral, in 2006. PETA wants the fur hats to be replaced with synthetic materials and claims that the Ministry of Defence has not done enough to find alternatives. In February 2011, Joss Stone appeared in a PETA advert targeting the Ministry of Defence, showing the 23-year-old soul singer holding a teddy bear that covers her naked body and features the slogan ’Bear Hugs, Not Bear Caps’." Army officials say approximately 100 skins are taken every year from the annual cull of thousands of bears by native Inuit hunters in a Canadian government programme to keep numbers under control.

Look Mickey! Group Exhibition

34FineArt is pleased to announce a new group exhibition entitled Look Mickey! The exhibition will feature works by several well known local and international artists, who have in various ways appropriated this iconic image of popular culture.

Mickey Mouse was created 87 years ago by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks at Walt Disney Studios in California, and the much loved figure is now often associated with mass media and consumerist culture. Starting life as Mortimer Mouse, Mickey first became widely know after featuring in the film Steamboat Willie, which premiered in New York on November 18, 1928. The film was an instant success, and was also the first animation to precisely synchronise its audio and visual tracks. Ub Iwerks’ initial design was significantly influenced by the frame animation requirements of the time, with Mickey’s circular body and three fingered hands proving much quicker, and therefore cheaper, to animate by hand. Over the years the character has undergone several makeovers, and has also been joined by a cast of anthropomorphic friends, like girlfriend, Minnie Mouse, Pluto the dog, Donald Duck, Goofy, and his nemesis, Pete. Animator Fred Moore was responsible for the first changes, replacing Mickey’s round frame with a pear-like body more reminiscent of the shape we know today, as well as shortening his nose and adding pupils and white gloves.

By 1937, Disney Studios was producing about 12 Mickey short films a year, and between 1930 and 1975 Mickey was also featured extensively as a comic strip character drawn by Floyd Gottfredson. Merchandising followed, as well as the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series, resulting in Mickey becoming one of the most identifiable cartoon icons in the world. This ubiquity also lead to the image being appropriated as a form of symbolic cultural currency. On American ballot papers, for example, the figure is sometimes used to indicate a protest vote, and further afield Mickey is often seen to symbolise the USA and the greed of its large corporations in the protection of trademarks and copyright infringement.

In the same way Mickey has been reworked and celebrated by various artists, including Keith Haring, Banksy, Takashi Murakami, and Damien Hirst, and has inspired a younger generation of Pop and Urban artists. Both Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol also produced seminal works based on Mickey as icon and visual image.

"The idea of doing [a cartoon painting] without apparent alteration just occurred to me ... and I did one really almost half seriously to get an idea of what it might look like. And as I was painting this painting I kind of got interested in organizing it as a painting and brought it to some kind of conclusion as an aesthetic statement, which I hadn’t really intended to do to begin with. And then I really went back to my other kind of painting, which was pretty abstract. Or tried to. But I had this cartoon painting in my studio, and it was a little too formidable. I couldn’t keep my eyes off it, and it sort of prevented me from painting in any other way, and then I decided this stuff was really serious ... I would say I had it on my easel for a week. I would just want to see what it looked like. I tried to make it a work of art. I wasn’t trying just to copy. I realized that this was just so much more compelling." – Roy Lichtenstein

Prominently featured in this exhibition and a first in South Africa, will be works by one of the youngest individuals currently making waves in the art world, fourteen year old Skyler Grey from Los Angeles. Already described as one of the brightest up-and-coming artists in the United States, Grey is your average 14 year-old, except for the impressive fact that his unique street art is on display in galleries across the globe, rather than on the family fridge. Grey’s work has been showcased in London, Switzerland and his first solo show in 2013 in LA drew huge crowds.

“I think art is a language and a lot of people don’t speak that language. One of the reasons a lot of people don’t speak that language is because they took the arts out of schools.” - Skyler Grey

Also included in the show will be a highly sought after limited edition Mickey interpretation by Damien Hirst especially commissioned by Disney, the original of which fetched £ 902,500 at auction; as well as works by artists Takashi Murakami, Mr. Brainwash, Ceet, Rouke Van Dal, Trust Icon, Eyesaw, Robin Coleman, Pegasus, Osch, RTX, Dillon Boy, Death NYC, Lewis Bannister, Esther Mahlangu, Asha Zero and Jade Doreen Waller.

Do not miss the opening on Tuesday 11 November 18:30. Runs until 20 December.
